The Castle's Eastern, Outer Bastions

There are 4 outer defensible bastions to the east of Dover Castle.  They are known as (north-west to south-east) Horseshoe Bastion, Hudson's Bastion, East-Arrow Bastion and East-demi Bastion.

Unfortunately all four are partly derelict and as a consequence are not open to the public.

Horseshoe Bastion

The one in the worst condition is probably East-Arrow.  This was probably destroyed when the East-Arrow Barracks were built in the 1930's (demolished in the late '60s).  It is possible that the Bastion is buried under spoil from the earth works made necessary when the barracks were built. There is no sign at all of the Bastion although the ground trace can be seen today.
